Lazy Yorkie Ears – One Easy Way of Training Yorkie Ears to Stand

With its flowing coat, button nose, intelligent eyes, and unmistakable V-shaped Yorkie ears, the Yorkshire terrier is one of the showiest of all dogs. But the Yorkshire terrier is not born with its ears erect and alert to the tiniest of sounds; it usually takes about twelve weeks, in most puppies, for those ears to assume their permanent salute. In the occasional Yorkshire terrier, in fact a case of lazy ears might surface, and in that instance a method of training Yorkie ears to stand is required!

There is no hard-and-fast way of training Yorkie ears to stand, however, and different Yorkie web sites will offer different suggestions on how it might be accomplished. If you are working with a pair of stubbornly droopy Yorkie ears, here is one idea on how to get them upright:
First, training Yorkie ears to stand in dogs more than six months of age is almost impossible, so don’t wait too long for those Yorkie ears to rise on their own. Once you have decided to take matters into your own hands, begin by shaving your Yorkie’s ears (inside and out) from their tips about a third of the way down. Sometimes losing the weight of that hair is all it takes for the ears to be able to straighten up.

If your Yorkshire terrier is almost six months, however, his or her ears may already be close to full size. In that case it would be better to shave them halfway down. Then wet the remaining hair on the ears, and using a scissors, trim it neatly along the edges. Clean the inside of the Yorkie ears thoroughly with a Q-tip, dry them and then fold them in half vertically, as if you were going to stitch them shut in the front. (No, you’re not!).

Wrap the ears snugly with gauze while still allowing for healthy circulation, tape them with adhesive tape, and keep them taped for 72 hours. Remove bandages and let the ears alone unless they begin dropping again, at which time you will repeat the taping but only for 24 hours. Keep at it until they stand up permanently. If you’re lucky, it will happen the first time!

Yorkie Pups– Learning to Read Tiny Yorkie Puppies Before You Buy

There are some people who, after t heir first encounter with Yorkie pups, run out and purchase a Yorkie the first time they see an ad for Yorkie puppies for sale/adoption. Mother Nature pulled out all the stops on cuteness when it came to tiny Yorkie puppies, and it’s easy to understand why these rambunctious handfuls are now the second most popular breed of dogs in the US.

But snapping up the first Yorkie puppy which you see at a pet store or advertised in your local classifieds is not always the ideal way to find the ideal dog. Yorkie pups are reasonably easy to find; but great Yorkie pups are a different story. How can you go about choosing the Yorkie who will be the best fit for you?

One secret to sorting through the Yorkie puppies for sale/adoption in your area is to try to view them when they are still with their litter mates. Doing so will give you an idea of which Yorkie pups react gently to their brothers and sisters, and might therefore be more manageable why they are being trained. Some Yorkies are so hyper that they really have difficulty settling down to learn their lessons, and can drive their owners nearly to distraction.

You shouldn’t, however, try to take the easy way out and pick one of the tiny Yorkie puppies which spends its time curled up away from the action. Doing so may saddle you with an adult Yorkie who never properly socialized and isn’t much of a companion. If every puppy in a single litter seems to be indifferent to what is going on around it, then you are probably looking at an inherited trait that those Yorkie pups won’t grow out of.

The bottom line is that, while you should not automatically concentrate on the boss Yorkie pups when you are viewing Yorkie puppies for sale/adoption, you shouldn’t settle for the most submissive either. Try to find those which seem to enjoy mixing it up with their litter mates without having to dominate. Any Yorkie pups which appear alert, remain calm at your approach, and are confident enough to give your extended finger a nibble will probably adjust to you very well!

Yorkshire Terrier Accessories to Keep Your Yorkie Dog Safe

Yorkshire terrier accessories come in two varieties: Yorkshire terrier accessories which make perfect gifts for anyone who can’t resist these dynamic and spirited little canines. Gift accessories can include items like Yorkshire terrier figurines or mugs; photos, posters, and paintings; or even jewelry and clothing. Almost any Yorkshire terrier images which capture the personality of the breed are appreciated by its enthusiasts.

Then there are the Yorkshire terrier accessories you should have picked up for the little one’s arrival in your home, much in the same way that you would stock up on diapers and bottles for a newborn baby. Unlike a newborn baby, however, your Yorkie puppy will arrive ready to explore the world, and you want to make sure that exploration is safe.

Begin with a comfortable travel case in which you can stow your Yorkie dog during the trip home. You can find one with shoulder straps which will enable you to cart doggie around with ease on future expeditions, as long as you remember that it is not crush-proof like a fiberglass pet carrier.

Have a nylon buckle collar and nylon leash with a safety snap ready, or even better, go with a body harness which won’t pose a threat to doggie’s tiny neck. And order an identification tag to use as soon as the dog arrives home, until you can make arrangement for more permanent identification like a microchip implant.
Your Yorkshire terrier accessories would be incomplete without a couple of low-maintenance, chew-resistant, spill proof bowls for food and water. And of course, your Yorkie will need a crate to serve as a private domain, to which he or she can retire for privacy, a nap, or answer t he call of Nature while being housebroken. The crate should only be large enough for your adult Yorkie dog to stand up, turnaround, and stretch out fully when asleep.

Add a couple of chewy items lacking any parts small enough to get lodged in doggie’s windpipe, the proper grooming and bathing tools, and you’ll have what you need to make your Yorkie feel right at home!
